I am often amazed at the number of highly skilled CNC machinists and operators who can accomplish almost anything on a milling machine, but who are very uneasy and intimidated around a lathe because they don't really understand the meaning of basic lathe terminology. That is the purpose of this article.
Machine Tool Terminology. New to machining and not sure what jobs a mill or lathe can do, what to call a particular part or what it does? Once you learn the proper names for parts of the machine the instructions will make a lot more sense. (Click on the photos or links below to view a page on that item.)
Milling and Machining Center Basics Fundamental Manufacturing Processes Video Series Study Guide - 3 - In all kinds of milling a critical component is the workholding device and the ability to be changed over quickly to present new work or work surfaces to the tooling. Machining centers can utilize long machine beds, pallet changers and

Milling Machine Milling is the process of machining using a rotating cutter, with teeth, to machine surfaces, slots and voids in a work-piece. Millers can have vertical or horizontal spindles or can be universal where the spindle and its housing/gear system can pivot through 90°. The work-
A vertical milling machine has three movements: Vertical (up & down), longitudinal (left & right), and cross (front to back). Each axis is given a letter to describe it. X, Y, & Z Which letter is assigned to the left and right movement of the table?
Alternative terminology. A milling machine is often called a mill by machinists. The archaic term miller was commonly used in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Since the 1960s there has developed an overlap of usage between the terms milling machine and machining center.
Oct 13, 2010· I've got a machining guide about milling machines and I'm stuck with a couple of terms. The phrase are: 1) Select feed as function of the tool lead angle. 2) In case of vibrations, we recommend reducing cutting speed and/or depth of cut and increasing the feed rate. My try:

A five-axis CNC milling machine has an extra axis in the form of a horizontal pivot for the milling head. The end mill is positioned at an angle with respect to the table allowing extra flexibility for machining. A six-axis CNC milling machine includes an additional horizontal pivot for the milling …
Dec 04, 2005· The machine travels to various limit switches to teach itself 'where it is'. Now, once the table has arrived at this 'home position', then the coordinate system is typically set to all zeros. Or, the machine manufacturer may also assign certain coordinates to that home position.
Part of a drill press, milling machine, lathe tailstock or other machine tool that extends from and retracts into a part of the machine under control of a hand lever or handwheel. Typically, the quill has an industry-standard taper to hold a chuck or other tool-holding device. R8 Taper
Traditional 2-axis milling on a CNC machine is still very common, you adding another axis to the equation greatly expands your possibilities. You can make parts that you might not have been able to before when just using 2-axis programming, and it can possibly reduce cycle times.
